If you’re a proud cat owner of a large cat or multiple large cats, you want to find ways to keep them happy, healthy, and content. Yes, they are fed, watered, and have a comfy bed along with a few stuffed mice to play with, but is that enough?

What about a cat tree?

Cat trees, also called cat towers, aren’t fads—they are great for cats, (and cat owners!), and here are some reasons why:

  • As all cat owners know, cats love to climb. They love to have “vertical” space as well as horizontal space. Maybe you’re tired of retrieving your cat from the top of the refrigerator or bookcase
  • Cats have a natural instinct to scratch; they can’t help it. Unfortunately, it’s usually the solid wood legs of your dining room table that they use as a scratching post
  • Cats sleep 16-20 hours a day, and they can be found snoozing in the oddest places. My cat, Libby, is usually asleep in my husband’s sock drawer
  • Cats love to play! But maybe you’re tired of your cat continuously destroying the paper towel roll or hiding the Christmas ornaments from your tree
  • If you have more than one cat, you certainly notice territorial disputes among them

Cat trees address all of these feline needs by providing safety, comfort, exercise, and rest for cats. So, a cat tree may be just what you need for your large cat.

Since we are focusing on large cats today, first of all, let’s define “large cat.”

We are going to take a look at our top six choices of cat trees for large cats. Small or medium-sized cats can still enjoy these trees, but they are made specifically for multiple larger cats.

How Large is a “Large Cat?”

If you have ever wondered where your cat’s size falls into the cat size range, consider this. According to veterinarians, the average weight for a healthy cat is approximately 10 pounds. However, this average depends on the breed, as well. For example, a Siamese cat may weigh 5 pounds and be perfectly healthy, while a Maine Coon could weigh as much as 25 pounds and be healthy.

Today we are going to be focusing on larger cats, so cats heavier than 14 pounds.

What is a Cat Tree?

Fact: cats love furniture. They also love playing, hiding, and sleeping, and of course, scratching on it, especially your solid wood dressers. However, as we know, not all furniture is cat furniture, even though our cats think otherwise. Cat trees or cat towers are just that: sturdy cat furniture made just for cats to play, explore, hide, scratch, lounge, and sleep.

Cat trees are types of cat furniture that come in all different sizes and designs, but most of them include towers, condos, hanging toys, and scratching posts. Some are simpler, with a cat scratching post and a hammock, while others are more extravagant.  Cat trees provide hours of entertainment for cats, satisfy their scratching instinct, and give them a retreat to relax when they need it.

Benefits of Cat Trees for Large Cats

Multiple Cats

If you have more than one large cats, a cat tree can allow your cats to separate and have some isolated time. A cat tree is a good away to avoid cat fights. An interesting note from cat experts is that a dominant cat will often take the highest position on the cat tree. If you have multiple cats, you already know the “dominant” one, but it is interesting to see this played out.

Exercise

Typically, large cats don’t get much exercise. After all, it’s rare that you can take a cat on a walk like you can a dog. Large cats, in particular, can benefit from the exercise that comes with climbing and jumping on cat trees.

Isolation

If your cat is timid, she may need alone time, and a cat tree is an excellent place for her to perch away from the hustle and bustle of her environment. Alone time is essential for cats because even non-shy cats can get overstimulated and need a break.

Scratching Posts

Most cat trees feature at least one scratching post, covered with sisal, a durable material that most cats are drawn to. Now that she has her own posts to claw, she will probably stop scratching up the walls and furniture, which is a plus.

How Do You Choose the Right Cat Tree?

When looking for the best cat tree for your cat, you should consider the following factors:

Your Cat’s Size

Consider your cat’s size when choosing a cat tree. A heavier cat obviously needs the most durable cat tree. You will also want sleeping platforms that are large enough to accommodate your cat or cats. If the cat tree you are looking at has condos or tunnels, check out the measurements to make sure your cat will comfortably fit.

Your Cat’s Activity Level

If you have kittens, you know they can have boundless energy, but their energy levels tend to even out as they age.  However, some cats don’t lose their youthful energy and need lots of stimulation and playtime. Others need more time to lounge and watch their surroundings with a watchful eye.

Some cat trees are geared towards play, while others are geared towards rest. Then, there are some who have the best of both worlds: the perfect blend of fun and leisure.

Materials

Trees for large cats should be made durable, sturdy materials to last through the years. While most are not made of solid wood, many include materials from wood, so they should last. When assembled, cat towers should be strong enough for a large cat and not wobble.

The scratching posts should be covered with a heavy sisal rope or a similar material, so it can withstand years of cat scratching without falling apart.

A cat tree should be assembled with screws, not nails. Screws can be tightened when they become loose over time, while nails cannot.

Design

Some of the designs of cat trees are really creative! First, decide what you want in a cat tree.

How many tiers would suit your cat?  How many cat condos does she need? Will one scratching post be enough, or does she need more?  Do you want hanging toys? What about colors and style?

Some cat trees include baskets, hammocks, ladders, and other extras. With all the options out there, you should have fun exploring the different designs and deciding on one for your kitty.

Cost

Cost is always an important factor in deciding on a cat tree. Some of the larger, high-quality cat trees are not going to be cheap. That doesn’t mean that you should base your decision on cost. Definitely don’t go buying a cheap one, because more than likely, it won’t last long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Place My Cat Tree Outside?

The cat trees for large cats that we reviewed in this article are for indoor use only.  However, there are some that are made for the outdoors. Outdoor cat trees are generally made of solid wood to withstand the elements, and some of them actually look like trees!

Where Should I Put My Cat Tree?

When thinking about where to put your cat tree, don’t think, Well, there’s an empty corner of my house that may work… If you don’t frequent there, why should he?

Also, don’t just place it somewhere random and hope your cat will find it.
By nature, cats have special spots they have claimed as theirs–it’s where they spend most of their time. Perhaps it’s the living room or the den; maybe it’s your bedroom. Since your cat has already chosen her territory, it should go to her spot!

How Should I Clean My Cat Tree?

How you clean your cat tree depends on what type of cat tree you have. If you have one with removable parts, you can remove them and clean them according to the instructions.

Typically, you could use a brush or a damp cloth with mild soap to clean soiled areas. Also, vacuum cleaners typically have a carpet brush, so they will be useful to vacuum up cat hair and debris.
It’s best to abide by the cleaning instructions that come with your cat tree’s user manual.

My Cat Seems Uninterested in His Cat Tree! What Should I Do?

If your cat is not as excited as you are about his new tree, there are a few tips you can try. First, make sure that the tree is in a location that he frequents. There’s no point in sticking it in a place he doesn’t go.

Then, use treats, toys, or catnip to entice your cat onto the tree or a scratching post. If your cat responds to the catnip, you can sprinkle it on the tree. Hide your cat’s favourite treats in a cozy cat condo or dangle one of his favourite toys high enough to where he will need to climb the tree to reach it.

Give your cat plenty of praise and positive reinforcement when he spends time on his new tree.

 Conclusion

So, there you have it! All you need to know to buy the ultimate cat furniture – the best cat tree for your large cat. It will be an investment that he will enjoy now and for years to come, but your solid wood dresser and table will no longer be cat furniture.

Scratched up sofas, rescuing him from the top of the refrigerator, and kicking him out of your sock drawer will also soon be a distant memory.

  1. My cat is 21 pounds. None of the tall cat trees work as he can’t jump up to them. He uses stairs to get on the bed. Why do people always seem to think that trees for large cats means tall trees. I want one that is big enough in the individual beds built in so he can lay and sleep comfortably.

    Suggestions?

  2. Hello David I have 2 Male Ragdolls that like to sleep together on the top of the scratch poles
Well they are growing and have outgrown their cat pole “ TOP”
Any chance of getting a super large top so they both sleep together ??

  3. I have 5 indoor cats. 1 blue Russian weight 15.4 lbs. A Ragdoll weight 10 lbs. A Tortoise Shell weight 11 lbs. 1 gray male weight 12.2 lbs. And 1 Burmese 11 lbs. All rescue cats. I’m on a fixed income so that limits what I can afford. I have found 2 cat trees that I thought might work. I would like your opinion, please. One is 45.3″ Feandrea asin#B08MPWZDHS or model # 141W01. It has2 beds, 1 codo, 1 ladder, 2 toys. The other one is by the same company. 56.3″ model #15W. Asin# B078HV646M This one has 2 beds, 1 condo, 1 hammock, 2 toys. Which one would recommend?

    1. Hi Peggy, wow, I’m jealous. Your collection of kitties sounds wonderful 🙂 I was able to pull up the 1st tree you mentioned but the 2nd tree’s ASIN# didn’t come up for me. But, I think maybe it was this one? If so, I like both but if all of the kitties want to be on the tree at the same time, the second one that I linked above would give them all the space to do so. It’s a heavier tree that makes it more stable and sturdy. But, it’s also taller, that doesn’t help stability. But, if you look at the design of it, it seems like it’s well balanced. I would give it a try and you know that Amazon almost always has a great return policy, so you can likely see if it works for you. Also, bless you for adopting so many rescues, that’s beautiful. Give me permission that it’s OK and I’d like to send you a small Amazon gift card to make your purchase a little easier.
